BlueHost Hosting Review 2020

Bluehost is a long-standing provider for website hosting and other website-related services. We have been using Bluehost on our sister sites for over two years now and have slowly enjoyed their services more and more each time. Today, we take a look at the pro’s and con’s of Bluehost, and why we think Bluehost is one of the best website hosts out there today.

"Jump to TL;DR (Overview)

Introduction

It’s no secret that the web-hosting industry is quite saturated, with hundreds and thousands of internet/web hosting websites claiming to have the best uptime guaranteed, and a limitless service, we’ve only really found a few that are just that.

Bluehost is one of those, and we do not doubt that it will continue to be great going forward. Bluehost was founded in 2003 and so has not only years of dedicated know-how and expertise in this field but also has one of the best teams working behind them.

You can find out the difference between Shared, Cloud, VPS and Dedicated here.

The Benefits of using Bluehost as your hosting provider

1.    Site Uptime - 99.99%
Depending on the nature of your site, you want to be visible 24/7 just in case someone visits your site. Not only this but when people search for your business or website, they will want to click on it for more information, not an error page. Bluehost has one of the best uptimes we’ve ever seen, and have never noticed our site go down, or have any reports of it being down. 99.99% is almost perfect, but we think it’s naturally flawless.

2.    Pricing and Features

When you look for a website host, you might only look at the price, or you may focus on the features. Bluehost tries to navigate away from that, giving you the best of both worlds. A very lovely $2.75/month as an introduction price is very low when compared to others. Although this does jump up after a few months/years to $7.99, the price is still high for the features that it packs.

3.    Phenomenal Site Speed

If you care about SEO and want your site to perform nice and fast, you need a quick website host. Bluehost again, has you covered this front. Bluehost has some of the fastest web-hosting servers we’ve seen and can handle many requests without compromising on this speed.

4.    Security? Not an issue.

With Bluehost being a more cost-effective host, you may think that security may not be as tight. Well, when you look at it, the hosting packages come with a free SSL certificate to secure your domain and hosting.

Not only this but if you register a domain through them, you also get a free domain privacy feature (takes your name from the Whois register) and replaces it with the Whois protection. This not only helps keep your domain private to stop pesky cold-callers but also gives you a better sense of security with your data.

The plans also include some software called SiteLock, which is to help against malware attacks. CodeGuard is again included too, which allows you to roll-back your website to a backup once enabled, just in case something was to happen.

5.    APP Integration

Something else that Bluehost does well is they provide access to hundreds of different apps and integrations that you can use with your website to either increase security, usability or functionality to your site.

Bluehost has allowed you to one-touch install software that would otherwise take you quite some time to install, such as Wordpress. It also has integrations for CMS (content management systems) such as Drupal, Joomla, and many, many more.

Recently, Bluehost also includes a CDN (content delivery network). In short, CDNs can host images, videos and other large files that may slow your website load speed down, and delivers them to the website as and when they’re needed, significantly increasing the speed of your website.

5.    Globally recognised

As we mentioned at the start, Bluehost has been around for quite some time, having featured posts on several large-scale tech-sites and having great reviews all around. Not only this, but Bluehost is one of a handful of Official recognised and recommended website hosts for Wordpress, one of the most widely used website platforms in the world.

7.    30 Day Money-back Guarantee

Bluehost and ourselves, really believe in their products, and do so much that they offer a 30day money-back guarantee if you don’t like their services. This can be an excellent opportunity for you to test their services out, and if you like them - you’ll be glad you tried it!

Unfortunately, there are some slight terms with this;
●    Only web-hosting costs can be refundable, and so Domains or other add-ons cannot be refunded.
●    A $15.99 fee will be deducted if you got a free domain with your package.
●    Any requests after 30 days will not be refunded.

Luckily, we don’t think you’ll be needing this policy anyway.

8.    Easy to use, very simple.

Unlike some of the other hosts, Bluehost have made it very simple to start your website and even manage it going forward. Some hosts allow you to make changes to everything, but finding out where to make those changes can take quite a bit of time. Bluehost has everything laid out, nice and straightforward and allows users to access everything they need, within a few clicks.

Not only this, but Bluehost also has documentation (Knowledgebase) on how to use their site if you ever get stuck. Which leads us onto point 9;

9.    Customer Support

Hosting sites have been known to have excellent customer service as the services can be easily supported once up and running. However, Bluehost are super helpful. Every question we’ve thrown at them has been answered efficiently and effectively. Some questions and live-chat operatives may not be the fastest to reply, but they make sure that you’re all up and working before the chat finishes.

This alone is one of the reasons we use Bluehost for some of our sister websites, because if we ever get stuck with something - we know we can always fall back on the support of Bluehost.

The Negatives of using Bluehost

Now, this wouldn’t be an honest review if we didn’t review both sides of the story, and unfortunately, Bluehost does have a few negatives that we want to bring to light.

1.    Renewal Pricing

Unlike other hosting websites, you do have to pay for a year upfront. And when you do this, you do start to look at some quite high renewals. When put into monthly perspective, you are still only paying a few dollars for an excellent service, but if you don’t have the capital built up to pay for a year upfront, then it might be a bit more of a problem.

If you want to renew your domains individually too, these are also a little higher than the average compared to other web-hosting related service providers.

1.    Site Migrations

Commonly, web-host companies will see moving a website as a way to make a customer happy and think of them as ‘the’ company to go to when they need website hosting. Unfortunately, Bluehost doesn’t like that idea. Bluehost doesn’t offer free website migrations, meaning you’ll have to move it over / away yourself if you already have a pre-existing website.

Their one-time fee of $149.99 includes the migration of up to five websites, 20 emails accounts and any databases that may be tied into your website. In this price, they also claim that the transfer will be quick and seamless, meaning you shouldn’t experience any delays or downtime - but the cost alone is a letdown.
