How to enable email forwarding in Gmail

There may come a time when Gmail isn’t working for you, or you want to transfer your old emails from Gmail to a custom domain but some ‘common’ email interfaces don’t allow this to be done super easily. Today, we’ll show you how to add an email forwarder to your Gmail account.

As far as we’re aware, there is only a single way of doing this, so hopefully, this works out for you!

1. Go to Gmail and log into your account.

Gmail Loading Screen

2. Once in Gmail, click the ‘Settings’ icon in the top right corner of the webpage, and enter ‘Settings’.

3. Once in the Settings window, using the tabs at the top of the page, navigate over to ‘Forwarding and POP/IMAP’.

4. Once on the ‘Forwarding and POP/IMAP’ tab, you will see a ‘Forwarding’ tab at the top. Here you can add an address to forward emails to.

5. Click on ‘Add a forwarding address’ and add an address that you would like all your emails to be sent to.

6. This will bring up a confirmation box, in which if everything looks correct, it can be added once pressed ‘Proceed’. This will then send a verification email to the forwarded address. Once you have the code, enter it in the same location that says ‘Verify ’.

7. Once done, this will have all your emails forwarded.

Should you only want some of your emails forwarding, you can make a ‘filter’ which in turn will only send emails that you want, specified in the filter. We wrote a guide on it here, called ‘How to make an email forwarding filter in Gmail’.

Should you wish to remove the forwarding, you can complete Steps 1 - 4 and then click ‘Remove Address’ from the side of the email.
